GREENSBORO, Nc. - Sam Houston finished in sixth place at the Stallings Invitational hosted by North Carolina A&T over the weekend.
The Bearkats went 1-2 during the final day of the tournament, taking down the University of Nebraska in the first round of bracket play before falling in back-to-back games against North Carolina A&T and Duquesne University.
The losses today were just the second and third loss the Bearkats suffered all tournament.
"Coming out of the gates is important," said Head Coach Brad Hagen, "but we needed to manage everything after the fact better."
The tournament got off to a near perfect start for the Bearkats, going 4-1 in Friday's baker matches that included wins against No.5 Vanderbilt and No. 4 North Carolina A&T. They would drop their only game of the day to Mt. Saint Mary's in the last match of the day by only 10 pins.
The Kats took their momentum from Friday's matches and turned in a perfect 5-0 record in Saturday's traditional matches. Along the way, taking down the likes of No. 12 UAB and No.14 Norfolk State. But the highlight of the day would come in the last match of the day, where Sam Houston would take down No.1 ranked Jacksonville State 1038-1028 and secure a perfect outing heading into bracket play.
"We got the much needed 10 wins we needed this weekend and we'll build off that," said coach Hagen. "February has been great but mentally and physically a grind. Three states in three weekends is a lot for any sport but when you're competing three days straight, for 6-7 hrs a day, it plays a toll on you."
The 30-9 record in the month of February is the best month the Kats have had all season.
"This week's priority is rest both mentally and physically but we still have much work to do, so to stay sharp where we need to be going into our last regular season event," said coach Hagen.
Sam Houston will travel to Smyrna, Tennessee to compete in the Music City Classic hosted by Vanderbilt from March 15th-17th.
