HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston got behind early and could not keep pace with Louisiana Tech in a 71-57 loss at Johnson Coliseum on Wednesday.
The Bearkats (7-20, 2-13 CUSA) did not get its first bucket until the 2:47 mark in the first quarter off of a Kaylee Jefferson jumper. By that point, the Kats had already fallen behind by 15 to the Lady Techsters.
Shanti Henry led Sam Houston with 14 points, Jefferson added 13 and Kassidy Dixon led the Kats in rebounding with seven.
Sam Houston struggled to find offensive consistency in the first half, only hitting on 30 percent of its shots from the field. However, Jefferson and Dixon would kick start the offense in the second quarter. Jefferson scored four points and Dixon added four as well. A late three-pointer by Henry would make the game interesting for the Kats headed into halftime.
The third quarter would start better for Sam Houston compared to the first , with Henry scoring five points in the first two minutes of the quarter. However, Louisiana Tech would rip off a 10-2 run in the middle of the third and score the final four points of the quarter to go up by 16.
Sam Houston would use one last gasp in the fourth quarter, spearheaded by
Tamera Derrough,
Sydnee Kemp and Henry who combined for 19 points. The Lady Techsters would answer every shot the Bearkats made and put the game out of reach.
The Bearkats will travel to Pete Matthews Stadium to take on Jacksonville State in the season finale on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
