Sam Houston Athletics unveils alternate Bearkat mark

HUNTSVILLE - Four years after successfully launching a new brand identity, Bearkat Athletics has introduced a new secondary mascot mark.
The refreshed logo is an evolution of a "Sammy Bearkat" mark that originated in the 1950s and is a new element of the new athletics brand.
The new alternate mark bears the traditional sailor hat associated with the athletics mascot and features a modern, energetic and assertive representation of Sammy.
The new mark is an alternative logo designated for special applications and usage by the athletics department and limited retail availability.
"We wanted to bring another historical logo mark back into the fold, but with an updated look that complements our current athletics brand," said Russell Martinez, assistant vice president for marketing and branding. "The mascot logo we released in 2020 is still our primary mascot mark, but this new mark is a fun identity we wanted to add to our line-up."
Fall 2024 will feature other newly branded marks for Bearkat Athletics. Retro marks from the past will be used by Bearkat Football this season to commemorate the university's 100 years of orange and white.
"We have some fun surprises coming up this year," Martinez added.
