Kats open CUSA season at NM State

DALLAS — The Sam Houston men's basketball team will open and close the Conference USA regular season with a budding rivalry, the league office announced Thursday.

The Bearkats begin their title defense when they open with New Mexico State on Jan. 2 in Las Cruces then hopefully hoist the trophy again when the two teams meet in Huntsville to wrap up the regular season on March 8. Sam Houston and first-year head coach Chris Mudge went 2-0 against former head coach Jason Hooten and the Aggies a year ago.

The Kats travel to UTEP on Jan. 4 before playing the first home game of 2025 when Liberty comes to Huntsville on Jan. 9 and FIU on Jan. 11. Sam Houston will face newcomer Kennesaw State on the road on Jan. 16 then head to Jacksonville, Alabama to battle Jax State on Jan. 18.

Middle Tennessee will visit Johnson Coliseum on Jan. 23 two days before Western Kentucky, the CUSA Tournament champion in 2024, on Jan. 25. The Bearkats play three straight road games at Louisiana Tech on Feb. 1, FIU on Feb. 6 and Liberty on Feb. 8.

Jax State and Kennesaw make the return trips to Huntsville on Feb. 13 and Feb. 15, respectively. Road games at Western Kentucky on Feb. 20 and Middle Tennessee on Feb. 22 lead up to three consecutive home games to close the regular season versus Louisiana Tech on March 1, UTEP on March 6 and NM State on March 8.
