CORPUS CHRISTI — Sam Houston once again found itself in an early deficit on the road at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday afternoon, but this time a late rally fell short.
The Islanders scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 79
th minute to hand the Bearkats their first loss of the season with a 2-1 setback. Sam Houston is now 2-1-1, still the program's best mark since starting 2-1 in 2015.
The game was a defensive stalemate in the first half as neither team managed to break the ice with a score. The half ended tied at 0, but the fireworks were still to come.
A&M-Corpus Christi grabbed a 1-0 lead with a goal from Rachel Loetzer in the 57
th minute and appeared to put the game out of reach with the final score by Mai-Lisa Atis.
The Kats made a final push to knot the game as
Alesandra Maldonado finally got Sam Houston in business when she took a pass from
Kinsey Hill and found the back of the net for her first goal of the season in the 85
th minute. The final four and a half minutes did not produce another goal for the Bearkats who will try to bounce back Thursday when Incarnate Word comes to Pritchett Field for a 7:30 p.m. start.
Thursday's match is scheduled to be streamed online on ESPN+.
