Kats eye bounce back against UIW

HUNTSVILLE — For the first time this season Sam Houston will look to regroup following its first loss of the season this past weekend when Incarnate Word comes to Pritchett Field on Thursday.

The former Southland Conference rivals will go head-to-head at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase at the following link, and the match is scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+ for those unable to attend.

The Bearkats began the season 2-0-1 including a 3-1 win over Houston, the first-ever win over the Cougars, and a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over Houston Christian. Another former Southland Conference foe, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, handed Sam Houston its first setback, a 2-1 Islander win at home on Aug. 25.

The Kats wrap up their tour of the SLC with a stop in Beaumont on Sunday to face Lamar at 7 p.m. This game is also set to be streamed on ESPN+.

Landri Townsend leads Sam Houston with three goals this season, including two game winners against Houston and HCU. The goals moved her into seventh on the all-time list with 16 career goals scored.

Gabrielle Williams has two goals, both equalizers in the wins over the Cougars and Huskies.

NOTES

Sonia Curvelo has won 99 career games dating back to her time at Prairie View A&M. Her next victory will give her 100.

Landri Townsend's two goals give her a team-high three for the season. She is also now seventh all-time in goals scored at Sam Houston with 16.

Tiana Johnson scored Sam Houston's lone goal in a 1-1 draw with SFA in the season opener on Aug. 15 in Huntsville.

• Sam Houston beat Houston 3-1 on Aug. 18, marking the first time in program history the Bearkats had beaten the Cougars. Gabrielle Williams tied the game; Landri Townsend scored the game winner and Jasmine Dybala added the final goal.

• Sam Houston was 0-9 previously in the all-time meeting against Houston.

• Three goals scored against Houston was the first multi-goal game against the Cougars since the two teams first played to a 3-2 Houston victory on Sept. 12, 2004.

• The victory over Houston was only the second in program history against a Power 5 conference and first over a team from the Big 12. Sam Houston defeated Mississippi State of the SEC 1-0 in overtime at Pritchett Field in the season opener on Aug. 25, 2006.

• The Kats fell behind 2-0 to Houston Christian before rallying for a 4-2 victory. Indigo Sims got Sam Houston on the board first, Gabrielle Williams tied it, and Landri Townsend scored the game winner and an insurance goal.
