HUNTSVILLE — At times it looked as if Sam Houston wasn't going to get any luck as near miss after near miss couldn't break a scoreless tie in the opening half Friday against Southern.
Awareness and a clutch play, however, changed all that.
Indigo Sims scored in the second half to lift the Bearkats to a 1-0 victory over the Jaguars at Pritchett Fields in the final non-conference match of the season. The win also snapped a two-match losing skid as Sam Houston improved to 3-3-2 to give head coach
Sonia Curvelo the 100th victory of her career.
Cassia Souza kept Southern's early offensive attack at bay. The senior goalkeeper finished with one save as the defense never gave the Jaguars a real legitimate shot at scoring.
Souza's counterpart, Sydney Bellamy, as spectacular in the goal for the Jaguars. She had 11 saves with her only blemish coming on the goal by Sims, who was setup by
Hannah Bolin and
Landri Townsend.
The Kats have a break before beginning Conference USA play Thursday when NM State comes to town for a 6:30 p.m. match.
