DALLAS – For the second time this season, Sam Houston quarterback Hunter Watson and kicker Christian Pavon have been named the Conference USA Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, the league announced on Monday, following the Bearkats' win over Texas State.Â
The 2024 CUSA Players of the Week are voted on by a panel of the league's media. The pair earned similar nods following the Kats' season-opening win at Rice. It is the third week this season the Kats have earned at least one weekly honor from the league's voters.Â
Their efforts helped the Bearkats erase a 22-point deficit to take down Texas State on Saturday at NRG Stadium, 40-39, in the game's final seconds in what is now the largest comeback in program history. Â
Watson connected on 10 of 19 passes for 95 yards, but did the bulk of his work on the ground in leading the team with 27 attempts for 105 yards and a pair of scores. It was the second straight week he surpassed 100 yards on the ground, making him the first Bearkat quarterback in program history to do so in consecutive games. He currently leads the Kats and all CUSA quarterbacks in rushing with an average of 67.3 yards per game.Â
As for Pavon, the junior from Willis had made all four of his PAT attempts before connecting on a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter, including the game winner from 24 yards out with just six seconds to play. He had nailed a 46-yarder earlier in the period to draw the Kats to within 39-37 before the winning boot on the ensuing drive. Pavon is now 6-for-8 on field goals this season, including 3-for-4 from 40+ yards. Â
Watson, Pavon and the rest of the Bearkats will move back into CUSA play on Thursday when they travel to El Paso to take on UTEP. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. CT from the Sun Bowl. Â
The game will be aired on CBS Sports Network and can be heard on the Bearkat Sports Network.Â
