HUNTSVILLE– Sam Houston could not overcome a strong offensive performance by NM State, falling 79-61 in the Conference USA opener for both teams on Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats (7-4, 0-1 CUSA) entered the game with an unblemished home record, but the Aggies took control in the second half, outscoring Sam Houston 29-16 in the third quarter to build a commanding 65-43 lead.
NM State's Molly Keiser paced the Aggies with a game-high 29 points.
Sam Houston kept it close early, but the Aggies pulled away after the first quarter and maintained their momentum throughout the game.
Sydnee Kemp led the Bearkats with 13 points, while Kaila Kelley added 12 points and three steals. Forward Kyleigh McGuire chipped in 11 points in the loss.
Sam Houston will return to action on Saturday, hosting UTEP to close out conference opening weekend. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum, with the game airing on ESPN+.
