DALLAS – Sam Houston guard Fanta Kone was named the CUSA Player of the Week on Monday, per a release from league officials.
Kone was a CUSA All-Defensive Team player a year ago, but this is the first time she has claimed a weekly honor from the league after her skillset was on full display in the Bearkats' 78-44 win at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Wednesday.
The native of Mali finished with 12 steals against UAPB, setting a new CUSA and Sam Houston single-game record. The total is also currently the second-highest single-game total in the nation this year, only behind Notre Dame's Hannah Hidalgo who had 16 against Akron.
She not only stood out on the defensive end, but offensively, as she canned eight of her 11 shots from the floor to set a new career high with 18 points while also dishing out seven assists with only a pair of turnovers.
Kone and the Bearkats now return home for a pair of matches this week at Johnson Coliseum, starting Monday night when they host Prairie View. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
