CORVALLIS, Oregon — Lewis and Clark might have been the first to map a route through the North Pacific, but Sam Houston blazed its own trail Wednesday night.
The Bearkats withstood several clutch runs by Oregon State to coast to an 85-74 victory at Gill Coliseum. Kashie Natt led Sam Houston (7-3) with 19 points, Po'Boigh King added 18 and Veljko Ilic poured in 15.
The Bearkats closed the first half strong and picked up right where they left off the begin the final 20 minutes. King, Damon Nicholas Jr., who finished with 10 points, and Natt all scored to extend a nine-point lead at the half to 57-41.
Oregon State (6-6) went on an 8-0 run to get back within seven as Sam Houston went close to six minutes without scoring. Ilic finally ended the drought with a hook shot, and after a defensive stop, Natt added a 3-pointer and a layup to make it 71-59.
King delivered the dagger when he was fouled making a 3. He calmly dropped the free throw in for a rare four-point play and a commanding 12-point lead in the final minutes.
That was similar to how the end of the first half went.
Natt and Justin Begg hit a pair of deep balls around a short pullup jumper by King to grab an 8-2 lead right out of the gate. Ilic scored four straight points for the Kats as the score remained in favor of Sam Houston until the Beavers tied it at 14 with just over 13 minutes left in the opening period.
The Bearkats answered, however. Manning, who chipped in 12 points, nailed one of Sam Houston's 10 3-pointers, Ilic laid one in and Natt made a free throw to push the lead back to 20-14. Freshman Matt Dann came off the bench to give Sam Houston its biggest advantage of the half at 28-19 with a layup at the 7:33 mark of the half until Manning hit another shot from behind the arc to make it an 11-point game.
OSU went on a 12-2 run to pull within 36-35, but the Kats regrouped and stepped on the gas. Natt scored his eighth point of the half, and King and Begg connected on back-to-back 3s to send Sam Houston into the break on top 46-37.
This was the final tuneup before the Bearkats open Conference USA play on Sunday at New Mexico State.
