HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston Bearkats put five players in double figures, but it was not enough as SMU pulled out a 73-69 win on Friday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Fanta Kone had 13 points and seven assists and Deborah Ogayemi had another double-double with 12 points and 10 boards to lead the way for Sam Houston (5-4); however, SMU (6-6) held a 13-point lead at the end of the third quarter, which proved to be enough.
The Kats outscored SMU 28-19 in the final period, hitting all three of their 3-point baskets in the final 10 minutes to nearly erase the double-digit deficit. Sam Houston continued its trend of defensive pressure with 25 forced turnovers with Ogeyemi totaling a game-high five steals.
Pop Inmon and Aysia Ward-Strong joined Kone with a team-high 13 points, while Whitney Dunn added 10.
