Wilkerson rakes in POW awards

HUNTSVILLE — Senior guard Lamar Wilkerson had a week to remember on the way to helping Sam Houston post back-to-back Conference USA wins for the first time this season and it caught plenty of attention.

Wilkerson was named the College Insider Lou Henson National Mid-Major and Conference USA Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 27 points and 4.5 rebounds in wins over first-place Jax State and Kennesaw State at Johnson Coliseum. Those are the first weekly awards for the Ashdown, Arkansas native this season who is the second leading scorer in CUSA at 19.7 points per game.

Wilkerson had a huge week for the Bearkats, helping the team snap a seven-game losing streak with a pair of 20-point efforts in home wins over the Gamecocks on Feb. 13 and Owls on Feb. 15.

He tied his career-high for the third time this season with 29 points on 6 of 9 shooting from 3, including one with four minutes to go that ensured Sam Houston did trail again in a 66-61 win over the Jax State. Wilkerson followed that with 25 points and six boards in a 78-76 victory over the KSU.
