HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston pushed across three runs in its final two at-bats to snap a 4-game skid and snag a 6-3 win over NJIT on Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium.
Sam Houston (2-5) led for the first six innings of the game before NJIT (2-5) tied it up with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh; however, the Kats immediately put the pressure back on in the bottom half of the frame to plate runs on a Highlander miscue and a sacrifice fly from Blake Brown to go back in front.
Ryan Franden added an RBI triple with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to tack on another run, capping a 2-for-5 day which included a pair of RBI for the Bearkat second baseman. It was SHSU's second RBI triple of the game as Brady Christensen got Kats on the board with a 3-bagger of his own in the first inning.
The day was a solid one at the plate for Brown too, as he finished 1-for-1 with a double, two walks, two RBI and a sac fly.
The late push made a winner of reliever Cole Marthiljohni, who threw 3.0 scoreless innings out of the pen. He was the final arm on a staff day which saw four Kats take the hill, starting with Connor Zarbua who threw up 2.0 scoreless frames. Felix Schlede followed with 3.0 innings and three punchouts before Brock Rod threw a bridge inning before handing it off to Marthiljohni.
Nate DeSchryvyr was the losing pitcher for NJIT as he allowed three runs in 4.0 innings, striking out three but also issuing half of the Highlanders' eight walks on the day.
