Lamar rallies past Bearkats in midweek clash

HUNTSVILLE — Lamar used a three-run double in the sixth inning to come from behind to hand Sam Houston a 4-3 setback at Bearkat Softball Complex on Tuesday evening.
Â
The Bearkats (7-7) cranked out six hits but only got one big knock with runners in scoring position, and it looked like it might be enough to claim the win.
Â
Bella Perez launched a 2-1 pitch to straight center field to put the Bearkats on top when Allie Saville and Kinsey Hobbs came around to score for a 3-1 lead. Saville got the rally started with a one-out single, then Hobbs drew a two-out walk off starter Reagan Smith.
Â
Lamar barely scratched across a run in the top of the first for the early lead. The lead-off batter reached on a throwing error, and starting pitcher Makenzi Jenkins got the next two batters out but gave up an RBI single before she could get out of the frame.
Â
The Cardinals threatened again in the fourth when another error put a pair of runners on. This time Jenkins shut Lamar down and did not allow a run to cross.
Â
Lamar did finally breakthrough in the top of the sixth on a tough-luck call at the plate.
Â
With the bases loaded and two outs, relief pitcher Abigail Young gave up a run-scoring double to Ava Blakely to tie the game and appeared like she was going to get out of the inning without giving up the lead. The Cardinals caught a break, however, as the runner who was on first was able to sneak across for the go ahead run on a close play as Blakey was thrown out trying to stretch her double into a triple.
