HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston came out flat and never got on track on a 90-66 loss to Louisiana Tech in Conference USA action at Johnson Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
The setback dropped the Bearkats to 11-18 overall and 4-12 in the league as the team now has only two games left in the regular season to tune up for the CUSA Championships in Huntsville, Alabama in two weeks. The Bulldogs meanwhile improved to 19-10 and 8-8 in conference play.
Sam Houston came out of the gate making shots early but quickly went into an offensive slump that allowed LA Tech to take the lead. The Kats went more than three minutes without a basket before
Marcus Boykin, who finished with 14 points, hit his second 3-pointer of the opening period to cut the lead to 18-14.
Boykin followed it with a steal and took it all the way for a fastbreak layup to trim it to 20-18 a minute later.
Lamar Wilkerson who extended his double-digit scoring streak, the third longest in the country at 32, with 22 points nailed a 3, and
Cameron Huefner tipped in a missed layup to help Sam Houston trim the lead to 36-30 at the break.
Huefner, who added 18 points, hit another 3 in the second half to keep the Bulldogs' lead under double digits at 46-38, but LA Tech went on an 8-3 run to break the game open.
The Bulldogs dominated the paint on Saturday. LA Tech outscored Sam Houston 38-28 in the paint and scored 15 points off 11 Bearkat turnovers.
The Bearkats return to action at Johnson Coliseum on Thursday when Sam Houston hosts UTEP at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
