Kats bounce back with win at Texas Southern
Sam Houston overcame a first-half deficit to bounce back with an 82-70 victory over Texas Southern at H&PE Arena on Dec. 6.
The Bearkats (6-3) got back on the winning track after falling at Oklahoma State 93-83 on Dec. 2. Senior Kashie Natt led the way with 22 points, five rebounds and four steals, and senior Po'Boigh King and Jacob Walker both scored 13 points with big baskets coming in the second half.
Sam Houston took an early lead only to fall behind out of the gate before the team finally started to settle in. Walker knocked down a pair of free throws then laid a shot off the glass on outlet pass from sophomore Isaiah Manning, who had 10 points, off an offensive rebound for 24-20 lead with just under eight minutes left in the first half.
Natt, who scored 14 points in the opening period, threw down a dunk on an inbound pass and Jacobe Coleman finished off an alley-oop as the Kats turned the game upside down and started to pull away after falling behind eight in the first few minutes.
Manning came up with a steal and dunk after a layup by sophomore Jaxson Ford to make it a nine-point game. Natt, Walker and King all scored to help San Houston take its biggest lead of the half at 43-29 at the break.
Foul calls prevented Sam Houston from blowing the game open in the second half. The Tigers were in the bonus with more than 12 minutes left and were able to pull within 59-54 thanks to free throws with under nine minutes left.
The Bearkats never let TSU get closer than two possessions, but the Tigers kept scrapping. TSU hit a 3 to get back within 4 but Natt and Manning made back-to-back layups for a 74-66 lead as time ran began to run out for TSU down the stretch.
Walker earns weekly CUSA honor
Jacob Walker has been a spark coming off the bench this season and after a solid week he was named the league's Freshman of the Week, CUSA officials announced on Dec. 8. He averaged 15.0 in a 10-point loss at undefeated Oklahoma State on Dec. 2 and a 12-point win at Texas Southern on Dec. 6. He scored a career-high 17 points against the Cowboys. The true freshman was 3 for 6 from 3-point range, including a 3 and a pair of free throws for his own 5-0 run to pull Sam Houston within 72-70 with just over five minutes to go in the game. He followed that with 13 points and five rebounds Saturday as the Kats topped TSU 82-70.
