SMYRNA, Tenn. — Sam Houston is in sixth place following day two action at the Music City Classic at the Smyrna Bowl on Saturday.
The Bearkats posted a 2-3 record on the day, notching wins over No. 1 Jackson State (1,021-963) and Fairleigh Dickinson (991-805), to carry a 6-4 record into Sunday's finale. Youngstown State leads the overall pin count with 10,317, followed by Vanderbilt (10,295), Maryville (10,252), Jacksonville State (10,129), North Carolina A&T (10,116) and Sam Houston (9,999).
Denise Blankenzee was the top finisher for the Kats in the individual standings with an average of 204.0 and a high of 246 to place 19th with 1,020 pins. Katie Paris was 28th with a 199.60 average and 998 pins.
"Simply put we let the matchups today dictate our head space too much," head coach Brad Hagen said. "After a tough loss in the first as well as second set, it was tough to bounce back and separate. We need to do a better job of moving on to the next thing. It's never fun making costly mistakes, but our rebounding and refocus needs to be quicker. We shouldn't be having those conversations this far along into the season.
"We still have an opportunity Sunday to save the weekend, and hopefully we'll rise to the occasion and build some momentum back up going into conference."
