HUNTSVILLE — FIU used a big sixth inning to come away with an 8-4 victory over Sam Houston at Bearkat Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers were able to even the Conference USA series after the Bearkats (18-21, 7-7) took game one on Friday night. Sam Houston will look to capture the series victory in the finale on Sunday.
The Kats battled from behind after the Panthers (27-12, 9-5) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off starting pitcher Tiffany Sanchez, who only lasted one inning after she gave up a double that eventually led to another run in the top of the second. Makenzi Jenkins came on in relief and shut FIU down in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Bella Perez got Sam Houston on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, and a double steal by Kinsey Hobbs and Morgan Holliday, who took home, cut it to a one-run game in the fourth. The Kats were able to tie the game in the fifth on a wild pitch with the bases loaded that brought in Brodie Quinlan who led off the frame with a single.
The Panthers got to Jenkins (0-3) and reliever Kendall Daniel in the sixth to grab the victory.
Game three is scheduled to begin at 12:30 on Sunday and will be streamed online on ESPN+.
