Kats Win against the Bears

HUNTSVILLE — The Bearkats defeated Central Arkansas 6–4 on Sunday to wrap up play at the Bearkat Classic Tournament at the Bearkat Softball Complex.Â
Sam Houston (3–2) set the tone early as Makenzi Jenkins retired the Bears (3–2) three up, three down in the top of the first inning. The offense followed immediately in the bottom half, with Bella Perez launching a two-run home run. Freshman Peyton Helmly added to the lead with her first collegiate home run.Â
The Bearkats extended their advantage in the second inning when Jordan Peno doubled to left field, driving in two runs. Helmly stayed hot at the plate, singling to center field to bring home Peno.Â
Central Arkansas mounted a late push in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to close the gap. Freshman Carlee Bubela entered the circle to secure the final outs, earning her first collegiate save.Â
Sam Houston will travel to Youngsville, Louisiana, to compete in the Mardi Gras Mambo Tournament from Feb. 13–15.Â
