
Kats get pair of wins at Mardi Gras Mambo

YOUNGSVILLE, La. — Sam Houston shut out St. Thomas (Minn.) and battled back against SIUE to open play at the Mardi Gras Mambo Tournament on Friday afternoon with a pair of victories.Â

The Kats (5-2) struck early in the first inning when transfer Veronica Harrison hit her first Sam Houston home run. The Bearkats extended their lead in the fourth and fifth innings and retired the Tommies (5-2) three up, three down in the seventh.Â
Kendall Daniel earned her first win of the season, pitching a complete game with three strikeouts. Tricia Yarotsky led the team with two hits, while Morgan Holliday doubled in the bottom of the fourth.Â

Sam Houston 2, SIUE 1Â
The Kats and Cougars (2-5) remained scoreless through four innings. SIUE scored in the top of the fifth, but Sam Houston responded when Morgan Holliday tripled to tie the game.Â
The Kats took the lead in the sixth on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan Peno that scored Sophia Lundstrom. Transfer Ripley Welker led the team with two hits.Â
Amy Abke earned her first win of the season in the circle, pitching seven innings while allowing one run and striking out eight.Â

The Kats continue play in the Mardi Gras Mambo Tournament on Saturday, facing Eastern Illinois at 3 p.m. and Georgia State at 5.
