YOUNGSVILLE, La. — Sam Houston State University dropped its third game to Eastern Illinois University before bouncing back against Georgia State University to finish 1-1 on Day Two of the Mardi Gras Mambo Tournament.

Sam Houston 4, Eastern Illinois 8

The Bearkats (6-3) struck early in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead when Bella Perez scored on Veronica Harrison's double to left field. The Panthers (4-6) answered in the bottom of the inning, tying the game.

Morgan Holliday put the Bearkats back in front in the top of the second with her first home run of the season. However, Eastern Illinois pulled away in the bottom of the second, using a five-run rally to take control.

Sam Houston made one final push in the third inning when Perez hit a two-run home run, but the Panthers held the Bearkats scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Sam Houston 11, Georgia State 1

The Bearkats took an early lead in the top of the first inning, scoring one run. Georgia State (5-4) remained scoreless through three innings before tying the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Sam Houston responded quickly, as Jordan Peno delivered a triple and Perez added another home run to regain the lead. The Bearkats continued to build their advantage in the sixth and seventh innings.

Harrison capped the scoring with a home run in the top of the seventh, and the Bearkats followed with a quick defensive effort to secure the run-rule victory.
