
Bearkats set for Islander Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI — The Sam Houston volleyball team will be on the road this weekend to participate in the Islanders Classic hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Dugan Wellness Center.Â
The Bearkats will take part in three matches for the event where they will be joined by Tarleton, Prairie View and host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Â
Sam Houston will start the weekend with a single match on Friday at 3 p.m. against Tarleton. The Kats then continue the weekend at 11 a.m. on Saturday against Prairie View and finish the tournament at 4 p.m. against the Islanders Saturday eveningÂ

The Kats have won three of their last four matches, most recently picking up a 3-1 win on Tuesday at home over Lamar. They took the first set, dropped the second, then bounced back to claim the third and fourth sets, securing a 3-1 victory.Â
Sam Houston has looked good offensively this year, hitting .228 as a team, led by freshman Chloe Monson's team-best 3.76 kills per set. Lauren Malone also averages 3.00 kills per set while Chelsea Butler is off to a fast start to 2025, accounting for 2.33 kills per set and a .361 attack percentage.Â
Defensively, Shaelin White is averaging 5.07 digs per set with no less than 17 digs in any match this season. Â
The Bearkats are undefeated against both Tarleton and Prairie View with a combined all-time mark of 17-0. They are also 25-19 all-time against the Islanders, a former Southland rival who they will face for the first time since 2023.
