
Kats take home CUSA opener against WKU

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston Bearkats opened conference play at home with a commanding 50–38 victory over WKU on Thursday night at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum, extending their winning streak at six.
Sam Houston (11–4, 4–0 CUSA) knocked down three 3-pointers in the opening five minutes to take an early 11–9 lead. The Lady Toppers (5–11, 1–4 CUSA) briefly trimmed the margin to one, but the Bearkats answered with suffocating defense, rattling off a 9–0 run midway through the second quarter to build a 10-point advantage heading into halftime.
Fanta Kone anchored the Bearkats on both ends of the floor, finishing with a team-high 16 points to go along with four assists and five steals. Deborah Ogayemi and Whitney Dunn added eight points and six rebounds apiece.
Sam Houston extended its lead to 14 by the end of the third quarter, capitalizing on multiple two-minute scoring droughts by the Lady Toppers. The Bearkats forced 33 turnovers, converting them into 22 points, and recorded 15 steals to secure the conference-opening win.
With the victory, Sam Houston secured its best 15-game start since the 2019–20 season.
