MIAMI — Sam Houston had some fun in the sun in Miami on Saturday and are bringing back a two-game road winning streak as a memento.
The Bearkats used lockdown defense and continued to make key shots to deal FIU a 76-63 loss at the Ocean Bank Convocation in Conference USA play. Sam Houston (11-7, 3-4 CUSA) has now won three of their last four league games after rolling into Jacksonville, Alabama on Wednesday knocking off Jax State 77-62.
Freshman Jacoby Coleman came off the bench to lead the Kats in scoring with 14 points on 6 for 12 shooting from the floor as the team connected on 44 percent of its shot attempts. Coleman hit back-to-back 3-pointers that put Sam Houston up 63-50 with just under seven minutes left in the game.
Po'Boigh King also connected on two of the Bearkats' 10 3s in the contest to finish with 21 points, and Veljko Ilic powered through a leg injury to chip in 11 points and four rebounds. Justin Begg, Kashie Natt and freshman Jacob Walker, who along with Coleman form the top scoring freshman duo in CUSA, all finished with nine points while Damon Nicholas Jr. yanked down a game-high 10 boards.
Sam Houston smothered the Panthers defensively. The Bearkats held them to just 29 percent shooting, but nine 3s and 24 points off free throws allowed FIU to keep it close early, even taking a 35-34 lead at the half.
The second half belonged to the guys in orange and black. Ilic scored four points, and Natt and Begg each drained a shot from behind the arc as Sam Houston took control of the game with a 10-0 run to go up for good at 44-35.
The Bearkats return to Johnson Coliseum to host Kennesaw State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
