Kats finish 3rd at Colonial Classic

HANRAHAN, La. - The Sam Houston bowling squad fought its way to a third-place finish to begin the 2026-27 season at the Colonial Lanes Classic hosted by Tulane on Sunday.

The Bearkats entered the championship bracket portion of the competition as the fifth seed and went toe-to-toe with sixth-seeded UAB Sunday morning in a best of seven. Sam Houston won 4-2 with a high of 249 in game five to set up a match with Alabama State.

The Kats rolled to a 4-0 victory 167-163, 180-160, 184-174 and 246-153. Sam Houston had another clutch performance in the third-place match against fourth-seeded Tulane.

It turned out to be another nailbiter as both teams tied at 190 in the opening game. Once again, the Bearkats persevered and took the next match 187-169 to grab the momentum for a 4-2 victory.

Louisiana Tech led the tournament from day one and ended up winning the championship. North Carolina A&T finished second with the Kats, Green Wave and Alabama State rounding out the top five.

Sam Houston will be back in action when Oct. 25 when it hosts the Kat Club Dual in Huntsville.
