HUNTSVILLE - WKU pulled away in the second half to hand Sam Houston a 16-3 loss Thursday night at Bowers Stadium.
Â
The Bearkats (1-5, 0-2 CUSA) held the Hilltoppers to 276 yards of total offense. WKU (3-4, 2-1) made plays when it mattered most, while its defense held Sam Houston to a season-low 112 passing yards.
Â
Sam Houston fell into an early hole for the third consecutive game when the Hilltoppers drove the length of the field for a touchdown on their opening possession after stopping the Bearkats. WKU quarterback Brock Glenn guided the Hilltoppers to a 10-0 lead with a 23-yard touchdown pass and a subsequent field goal.
Â
Sam Houston, which had put together a promising drive earlier after starting inside its own 5-yard line, trimmed the lead to one score late in the second quarter. Quarterback Landyn Locke connected with wide receiver Chris Reed for a 14-yard completion to set up a 42-yard field goal by Sam Carpenter.
Â
The Bearkats could not get back on the scoreboard as WKU added a field goal in each of the third and fourth quarters to seal the victory.
Â
MJ Dowdy led Sam Houston's rushing attack with 55 yards on 14 carries, while Reed paced the Bearkats' receivers with three catches for 51 yards.
Â
Bearkat linebacker Dean Ford recorded a game-high 12 tackles, including one for a loss. Railyn Adams added six tackles, and Ishmel Atkins finished with five.
Â
Sam Houston will remain at home next week when NM State visits Huntsville on Oct. 21.
