WACO – The Sam Houston tennis team returns to action Thursday when the Bearkats open play at the ITA Texas Regional Championship at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco.
Hosted by Baylor, the tournament is scheduled to run through Monday and will feature singles and doubles competition among teams from across the ITA Texas Region.
The two singles finalists and the doubles championship team will earn automatic berths in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, scheduled for Nov. 17-22 in Athens, Ga.
The Bearkats have captured a pair of draw championships through their first two tournaments of the fall. Freshman Veronika Muzichenko won the Flight 7 singles title at the Rice Invitational, while Sara Sadadinovic and Maria Gajete went unbeaten to claim the White Draw doubles championship at the season-opening Lady Demon Invitational.
Sadadinovic also advanced to the Yellow Draw singles final at the Lady Demon Invitational, where Sam Houston picked up wins across each of the four singles and two doubles draws.
Following the regional championship, Sam Houston will return home to host the Bearkat Invitational Oct. 16-18 at the Chuck and Wanda Beckner Tennis Center.
