HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sweeping singles play with five victories the Sam Houston women's tennis team powered to its way to a second dual match victory in a row as the Bearkats defeated Southern Mississippi 5-1 on Valentine's Day Saturday.

The Bearkats were scheduled to complete its tour of Mississippi with a Sunday match at Jackson State, but the match was canceled due to inclement weather.

Sophomore Isabella Garza produced the match clinching victory against the Golden Eagles with a 6-3 3-7 6-1 victory over Miranda Lim at the number six spot in the line-up. The Bearkats opened the road trip Friday with a 7-0 shutout of Alcorn.

USM started action by earning the doubles point with wins at the two and three positions.

The Bearkats roared back in singles play. Aaliyah Hohmann picked up the team's first point with a quick 6-2 6-2 victory over Mahay Kuman at number five. Sara Sadadinovic followed up with a three-set 1-6 6-3 6-0 win versus Miranda Xu at the number four spot.

Anamaria Kurtsikashvili earned the Kats' next point with another three set thriller winning 1-6 6-2 6-4 over Sakura Sudo. Nayuma Subba also went three sets to defeat Angelina Blinova 3-6 6-2 6-4 in the number one spot.

Izabella Garza picked up the clinching victory with a 6-3 3-6 6-1 performance in the number six position.

The squad's schedule of 10 non-conference matches during February is preparing the team for the beginning of Conference USA action March 12 at WKU.
