
Kats place 12th in Border Olympics

LAREDO – The Sam Houston men's golf team finished 12th at the Border Olympics, held at Laredo Country Club.
The Bearkats posted a 14-over-par final round to finish the two-day tournament at +26 overall, ending just one stroke behind Troy and two shots back of HCU.
Alex Malanga led the Kats, finishing 11th overall after an impressive final round that included a 5-under-par back nine with four birdies and an eagle on the 17th hole. Malanga totaled nine birdies over three rounds and finished the tournament at even par with scores of 71-72-70.
In the end, host Houston captured the team title at 2-under-par, while Tarleton State and North Texas tied for second at even par.
Jackson Hymer recorded a birdie on the second hole and finished tied for 22nd at +4 overall with rounds of 69-73-75. Grayson Petru closed the tournament with a 78 to finish at +10, posting rounds of 73-72-78.
Caleb Lumpkin and Sebastian May delivered consistent performances in the second and third rounds. Lumpkin added birdies on holes four and 16 in the final round, posting identical scores of 75 in rounds two and three to finish at +17 (80-75-75). May finished one stroke behind at +18, recording three birdies in the final round to post scores of 75-78-78.
Preston Hiller competed as an individual, shooting rounds of 80-80-85 to finish at +32.
Sam Houston will take a short break before traveling to the Mardi Gras State to compete in the Louisiana Classics, hosted by the Ragin' Cajuns, beginning Monday, March 9, at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, Louisiana.
