Tennis falls to Rice

HUNTSVILLE – Senior Nayuma Subba's victory over a player ranked among the top 50 in the NCAA national singles rankings highlighted the Bearkats opening women's tennis home dual match against the Rice Owls Saturday at the Chuck and Wanda Beckner Courts Saturday afternoon.
The Rice women, ranked among the top 50 squads in the NCAA women's team rankings this year for the 18th time in the past three decades, posted their seventh dual match victory of the season. Sam Houston came into their 2026 home opener as the winner of three of their last four contests.
Subba defeated Darya Schwarzman who came into a the contest with an11-4 record in number one singles action.
"We were really proud of the team's effort today especially with Nayuma's performance," Bearkat head coach Rub Hubbard said.
Saturday's contest was the Kats' first on their home court after 10 consecutive dual matches on the road. Sam Houston gets back into its traveling mode again with the squad's next three duels at Tennessee Southern, Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. The second and third of those matches will open the team's 2026 Conference USA Tennis Schedule.
