INDIANAPOLIS — The Sam Houston bowling team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 13th year in a row, earning an at-large bid to this season's championship.
The Bearkats were selected to the Rochester, New York Regional and will begin play April 3-4 against Maryville.
This is the 14th time in 16 years Sam Houston has qualified for the NCAA Championships. The Kats won the 2014 NCAA Championship, knocking off Nebraska in the finals.
The Bearkats have only missed the NCAA postseason once, in 2012, the second year of the program. The 2020 Championship was canceled due to the pandemic.
This will mark the fifth year the NCAA will use the expanded regional format going from eight teams at one location to 19 squads spread over four different regional sites. The Kats will be joined in Rochester by overall No. 2 seed Vanderbilt, who will face the winner of a play-in match between Dominican (New York) and Alabama A&M, as well as Maryville.
The winner of each regional will advance to the NCAA championship which will be played April 10-11 at the Yorktown Lanes in Parma Heights, Ohio. The Mid-American Conference and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission are the hosts.
All regionals are double elimination except for the opening-round match at the five-team regional sites which will be single elimination. Each round will consist of teams competing in a best-of-three match format, bowled in the following order: five-person team match; Baker total pinfall; and best-of-seven Baker match play.
Regional competition will conclude with one team from each regional bracket advancing to compete in the championship. The champion will be determined using a best-of-seven Baker match play, with the championship match airing on ESPNU at 5:30 p.m. on April 11.
