Kats down WKU in tournament first round

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Christine Jevicky fought off a pair of match points and came all the way back to secure the match-clinching point on the No. 3 court to give the Sam Houston Bearkats a 4-3 win over WKU in the opening round of the CUSA Tournament on Wednesday morning at the MTSU Tennis Courts. Â
The win is the first for the Bearkats (9-12) in postseason play since an opening-round win over Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the 2022 WAC Tournament and pushes Sam Houston into the second round against top-seeded Louisiana Tech.Â
First serve vs the Bulldogs is set for 10:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.Â
Sam Houston found itself down early after the Hilltoppers (11-14) took the doubles point with wins on the Nos. 1 and 3 courts, but the Kats rallied in singles play. Nayuma Subba and Sara Sadadinovic wasted little time in surging Sam Houston in front with straight-set points on Courts 1 and 4. Â
WKU got a point back at No. 6 and the teams traded points on the Nos. 2 and 5 courts with Anamaria Kurtiskashvili outlasting Emily Schut at No. 2 to square it at 3-3 and leave it to Jevicky for the final point.Â
The senior took the first set from Virginia Madueno but dropped the second and ultimately found herself down to her final point in a Set-3 tiebreaker; however, she was able to fight off match-point twice and ultimately finished off Madueno 9-7 in the tiebreak for the win.Â
