Bearkats fall to Texans in three close sets

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston volleyball fell to Tarleton in three close sets Thursday at Wisdom Gym to open the Tarleton State Invitational, 25-22, 25-23, 27-25.
The Bearkats battled throughout the match, recording 37 kills, 36 assists, 50 digs, four service aces and 18 total blocks. Sam Houston hit .176 as a team across 119 total attacks.
Chloe Monson led the Bearkats offensively with 16 kills on 43 attacks for a .279 hitting percentage. She also recorded two aces, three blocks and eight digs to finish with a team-high 19.5 points.
Bella Wood added six kills, one ace, one block and three digs, while Annika Brooks and Faith Roulston each contributed four and three kills, respectively. Kameron Rector provided an efficient attack off the bench, recording three kills on eight attempts without an error for a .375 hitting percentage.
At the net, Rachelle Reed led the Bearkats with five blocks, while Chelsea Butler added three blocks and three kills. Sam Houston totaled 18 blocks in the match, with nine coming across the first two sets and nine more in the third.
Lauren Pyle directed the Sam Houston offense with 16 assists, while Brenlin Garlitz added 15 assists. Shaelin White contributed five assists and led the Bearkats defensively with 11 digs. Pyle also finished with 10 digs, while White and Pyle helped Sam Houston reach 50 digs as a team.
The Bearkats stayed within striking distance throughout the match, with the first set ending 25-22 and the second 25-23. Sam Houston pushed Tarleton to extra points in the third set before falling 27-25.
The third set featured five lead changes, while the match had 11 total lead changes and 34 tie scores.
Sam Houston will continue tournament play Friday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
