Kats place ninth at Bearcat Invitational

CINCINNATI, Ohio. – Sam Houston men's golf finished ninth at the Bearcat Invitational, hosted by Cincinnati at Coldstream Country Club.
The Bearkats carded a final-round 3-over-par 287 to finish the 54-hole tournament at 2-over-par. Sam Houston finished three strokes ahead of Chattanooga and placed ahead of several Power Four opponents, including Iowa State by four strokes, UCF by six, Nebraska by 10 and Minnesota by 11.
Alex Malanga led the Bearkats, tying for fourth at 6-under-par. Malanga opened the tournament with a 1-under-par 70, recording four birdies in the opening round. He followed with a 3-under-par 69 in the second round, again tallying four birdies, before closing with a 4-under-par 68 that included four more birdies.
Caleb Lumpkin followed with a tie for 11th at 3-under-par. Lumpkin carded rounds of 72, 68 and 70. He recorded two birdies during the first five holes of his second round and added three more birdies in the final round.
Grayson Petru tied for 55th at 5-over-par after posting rounds of 72, 73 and 73. Petru recorded eight birdies throughout the tournament.
Brett Jones tied for 77th at 6-over-par with rounds of 71, 72 and 76. Making his Bearkat debut, Jones recorded 10 birdies across the three rounds.
Jackson Hymer finished tied for 89th at 12-over-par, carding rounds of 72, 74 and 79.
Liberty claimed the team title at 15-under-par, followed by TCU at 12-under and tournament host Cincinnati at 10-under.
Sam Houston returns to the home state for the Bayou City Collegiate beginning Monday, Sept. 21. The tournament will be hosted by Rice at Westwood Golf Club.
