Brandon Jones, a former All-Big 12 honorable mention selection for Texas Tech, joined head coach Todd Whitten’s Sam Houston staff this summer. Jones has served the past two seasons as an offensive graduate assistant for the Red Raiders while working on his Master’s degree in Sports Management. He received his Bachelor’s degree in communication studies in 2006.
As an offensive assistant for the Red Raiders, he worked with weekly opponent’s film breakdown and the defensive scout team. On game day he communicated with the sidelines from the press box. During the off-season he assisted with recruiting and worked with the Red Raiders’ summer football camps. Texas Tech rolled up records of 9-4 and 11-2 (best in school history) during his two seasons on the coaching staff. The 2007 Red Raiders earned a final No. 18 national ranking and played in the Gator Bowl. The 2008 Texas Tech squad ranked No. 12 in the final AP poll and went to the Cotton Bowl.
As a player, Jones started 22 games at center. He earned honorable mention All-Big 12 recognition as a junior. His senior season he was a Rimington Award candidate as the nation’s top center and earned the E. J. Holub Double Tough Award and the team’s Most Improved Player honor. He was selected to play in the Texas vs. the Nation College All-Star game where he started and was named a team captain.
Jones was an first team All-State selection on both sides of the ball at McNary High School in Keizer, Oregon. He helped lead the team to the Oregan state championship. He was born in Wichita, KS, and grew up in Texas prior to moving to Oregon.
