Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay enters his second season as Sam Houston’s defensive coordinator in 2026 after joining head coach Phil Longo’s staff in February 2025.
Aughtry-Lindsay arrived in Huntsville following five seasons coaching nickels at his alma mater, NC State. He also served as the Wolfpack’s interim defensive coordinator for the 2024 Military Bowl.
His appointment reunited him with Longo for their third stop together. The two previously worked on the same staffs at Slippery Rock in 2011 and Ole Miss in 2018.
During his second stint at NC State from 2020-24, Aughtry-Lindsay helped coach a defense that finished second in the ACC in scoring defense (19.7 points per game) and passing efficiency defense (111.1) in 2021. The Wolfpack also ranked third in the conference in total defense (331.6 yards per game) that season.
Before returning to Raleigh, Aughtry-Lindsay served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at NC Central in 2019. The Eagles finished 17th nationally in the FCS in total defense, allowing 325.6 yards per game, and 11th in passing defense at 170.0 yards per game. NC Central also ranked 24th nationally with 23 takeaways.
He spent the 2018 season as senior player personnel analyst at Ole Miss following three seasons coaching linebackers at Campbell from 2015-17. He added defensive run game coordinator duties following the 2015 season.
Campbell ranked fifth nationally in total defense in 2015, allowing 279.3 yards per game, and set program records with 38 sacks and 85 tackles for loss. The Camels followed that performance by ranking 17th nationally in total defense in 2016.
Aughtry-Lindsay previously served as defensive coordinator and special teams coach at St. Augustine’s in 2014, linebackers coach at Elon from 2012-13 and linebackers coach at Slippery Rock in 2011. He began coaching at Andrews High School in High Point, N.C., in 2007 before working as a recruiting assistant at NC State in 2008 and a defensive graduate assistant from 2009-10.
A four-year letterwinner and two-year starter at linebacker for NC State from 2001-04, Aughtry-Lindsay finished his career with 266 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He was part of the Wolfpack defense that led the nation in total defense in 2004.
Following his collegiate career, he played two seasons in arena football with the Arkansas Twisters and Laredo Lobos.
A native of High Point, N.C., Aughtry-Lindsay earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from NC State in 2006. He and his wife, Amber, have four sons: Colton, Colin, Colter and Colbie.
