Sam Houston Athletice Site

Payne Andrus joined the Sam Houston men's basketball staff in August 2022 after serving as an assistant coach at Weatherford College during the 2021-22 season.

After one year at the U.S. Naval Academy, Andrus transferred to Mid-American Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas, where he completed his undergraduate studies and earned all-conference honors on the basketball team. He earned a master’s degree at Sam Houston State University while serving as a member of the Bearkats’ coaching staff as a graduate assistant. 

He grew up in a basketball family, having played for his father, who coached at Willis High School. He earned all-district, all-region and all-county recognition before graduating in 2013.
