The Bearkat Softball Complex opened in 2006 as part of a combined baseball and softball facility upgrade. That project came at a cost of $5.5 million and gave the Sam Houston softball program a permanent home after playing games at various sites including the intramural fields, Josey Park, Kate Barr Ross Park and the old Bearkat softball field on Avenue M.

The facility includes spacious dressing areas, indoor hitting cages, coaches' offices and an athletic training area. It underwent another significant upgrade in the fall of 2024 when field turf was installed throughout the facility.

Sam Houston has hosted the Southland Conference softball tournament twice, winning the event in 2007 to advance to the NCAA Division I national championships for the first time in school history. It also hosted the 2022 WAC Tournament.

The state-of-the-art video board was installed prior to the 2016 season. The board is 23 feet x 11.2 inches tall and 27 feet wide. It includes a video screen and features sponsor advertising opportunities to provide additional revenue for the Bearkat Athletic program.
