After the first two games, Sam Houston State appeared to be on the verge of a Southland Conference volleyball upset.
But three-time defending SLC champion Stephen F. Austin found their game and rolled to victories in games three and four to tie a league record with their 58th consecutive regular season Southland victory. Texas-Arlington set the record in 2001.
Stephen F. Austin won the match 30-27 27-30 30-16 30-15.
Led by Cynthia Yarotsky with 12 kills and Launa McClung with 10, the Bearkats brought their A-game to start the match.
Sam Houston held a 24-21 lead in a first game which saw five lead changes and six ties. But SFA rallied to win nine of the next 12 points to win the first stanza by a narrow 30-27 margin.
The Bearkats came out firing again in the second game, jumping out to a 13-7 lead. Stephen F. Austin came back to tie the game 22-22, 23-23, and 25-25. But Sam Houston held on to go into the locker room the match tied at a game apiece.
A different Lumberjack team emerged from the break. After the eighth score of the game at 10-10, SFA won 20 of the next 26 points to win game three. The Jacks jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the fourth game. Sam Houston never came closer than eight points the rest of the contest.
Kelsey Owens led SFA with 18 kills. The Lumberjacks upped their season mark to 17-5 and stand 7-0 in Southland Conference play. Sam Houston State dropped to 9-10 for the year and 3-4 in league action.
