
Sam Houston State opens Southland Conference action with narrow 2-1 loss at Stephen F. Austin State

NACOGDOCHES -- Monica Madden scored Sam Houston State's lone goal Friday as the Bearkats fell 2-1 to Stephen F. Austin State in the Southland Conference women's soccer opener for both teams.
After a cross from the right wing bounced off a defender, Madden booted the loose ball into the back of the net in the 68th minute. The goal was Madden's first of the 2007 season.
Playing on a rain soaked field, the two teams went scoreless for the first 49 minutes. Stephen F. Austin jumped in front 2-0 on goals by Brenna Crockettt in the 50th minute and Erika Palmaccii 13 minutes later.
Bearkat goalkeeper Jenny Pence withstood an assault of 33 shots by Stephen F. Austin, making 17 saves. Sam Houston State made six shot attempts, three by Luana Miessa, two by Madden, and one by Alison Oakland.
Stephen F. Austin bettered its season mark to 5-3-1 while the Bearkats fell to 2-6 for the year.
Next action for the Bearkats will be a road match with Texas State-San Marcos next Friday, Oct. 12.
