AUSTIN - Lydia Gonzales and Whitney Smith led Sam Houston State with 12 points apiece as the Bearkats lost 91-41 to the University of Texas in a non-conference women's basketball game before 4,741 fans at the Erwin Center Sunday afternoon.
After LaToya Bennett scored the first basket of the game, the Longhorns went on a 23-0 run to go up 23-2 with 11:13 to play on a three-point basket by Kathleen Nash. Down 39-4, the Bearkats went on a 10-0 run in the final five minutes of the first half to trail 39-14 at intermission.
Sam Houston scored 27 points in the second half. The Bearkats were held to 23.4 percent shooting from the field, hitting 15-of-64 attempts. Texas shot 56.1 percent (37-of-66) and out-rebounded Sam Houston 51-29.
Gonzales led the Bearkats with nine rebounds. Britney Harris scored five points, Bennett four points, Brittany Brooks and Deltrice Daniel each had three points and Kristin Ford scored two for SHSU.
Brittainey Raven led the Longhorns with 19 points. Earnesia Williams and Ashley Lindsey both scored 12 points.
Sam Houston State drops to 1-7 for the season. Texas stands 6-2.
The Bearkats play in Fayetteville against the Arkansas Razorbacks Tuesday night.
