Bearkat women win Southland indoor title; men place fourth at meet in Houston

DAY TWO
HOUSTON -- Sam Houston State won its first ever women's Southland Conference indoor track and field championship here on Saturday while the Texas-San Antonio men won their second all time and second in a row.
The Bearkats scored 135 points, led by 22 from freshman Jessica Fisher, and ran away from Texas State (112.92 points) Texas-Arlington (98.142), Stephen F. Austin (85.29) and Lamar (84.14), which rounded out the top five.
Sam Houston State dethroned two-time defending champion Stephen F. Austin, which finished fourth with 85.28 points.
Fisher scored her 20 points by winning the 60 and 200 meter dashes. She crossed the line first ahead of teammate Regina Offord with times of 7.50 and 7.65, respectively, to give SHSU 18 points in that event. In the 200, Fisher was tops with a mark of 24.30 in the finals.
Lamar's Clerc Koenck was the individual high-point score in the women's division with 22.5 points. She won the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9:49.08 as Lamar placed one, two, three in the event.
"It sounds trite, but it's true. It was a total team effort for the women to win the Southland Conference indoor championship," SHSU head coach Curtis Collier said. "Coming into this meet, we figured the women could finish any where from first to fourth, the competition was so tight. But, after Friday night's prelims, when 17 of our 23 girls had personal best performances, I felt like we were hitting on all cylinders and had a chance to get it done. To show how much of a team effort it truly was, we scored in every event in which we had someone entered except the high jump."
In men's action, UTSA scored 114.5 points, 16.5 ahead of second-place UTA. SFA finished third at 82.5 while SHSU had 66 and Southeastern Louisiana 63.
"Fourth place was about the maximum best we thought our men could do this year indoors, and it wasn't easy," Collier said. "We got so much out of our sprinters, picking up big points in all their events and the relays. Today's performance was a job well done all around.
Besides Fisher, individual event champions for Sam Houston State women included Natalia Clark in the weight throw (57 feet, 6.25 inches), Jamie Spivey in the long jump (18 feet, 11.75 inchces), and Jennie Sewell in the pole vault (13 feet, 1.75 inches). The pole vault gold medal for Sewell marked her six Southland Conference pole vault championship with four coming indoors (2003, 2004, 2005, and 2007).

DAY ONE
HOUSTON -- After day one of two at the 2007 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, Stephen F. Austin has the lead in both the men's and women's division after six scored events for each. The Ladyjacks are looking for their third title in as many years while the Lumberjacks pursue their second in three years at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston.
Justin Reyes led the way for the men by winning the high jump with a bound of 6-9.50 to get the day started with 10 points for SFA. Sumbo Adeniran took gold in the long jump for the Lumberjacks with a mark of 24-4.25.
On the women's side, Meghan Daniels was the leader for SFA, winning the women's high jump at 5-7.75.
Competition concludes on Saturday with the action starting at 8:30 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdles of the men's heptathlon. Field events begin at 11 a.m.
with running finals starting at 1:30 p.m.
