Bearkats receive two points in AP poll

HUNTSVILLE ? For the sixth straight week the Sam Houston State Bearkats men's basketball team has received at least one vote in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
The Kats picked up and extra point this week, giving them two. They had as many as three points prior to their only loss of the season, a 79-78 overtime loss to San Diego State on the road.
The Bearkats closed out their nonconference slate on Saturday with a 60-58 win at home over Central Florida in overtime. SHSU finishes the pre-Southland Conference slate with a 12-1 record, their best since moving to Division I. The victory was the 44th in a row at home for the Bearkats against a nonconference opponent. Only Duke (58 games) has a longer streak.
On Dec. 3, the Bearkats received their first ever vote in the AP poll. Three weeks later they had three points, as well as four in the ESPN/USA Today poll.
After dropping the game to the Aztecs last week, the Kats lost all four ESPN votes and tow of their three in the AP poll.
Several other sites are giving recognition to the Bearkats. Collegeinsider.com's mid-major coaches poll has the Bearkats up to No. 4 this week, their highest ever in the seven-year-old poll. Realtimerpi.com has the Bearkats up seven spots to No. 24. Basketballstate.com, is a site that has developed a power rankings system and the Bearkats are ranked No. 10 this week.
Sam Houston State will open the Southland Conference season Wednesday at home against Southeastern Louisiana.
