Volleyball rallies for 5-set win over UTSA

HUNTSVILLE ? Trailing two sets to none and down 21-17 in the third set, Sam Houston State rallied to defeat Texas-San Antonio in five sets and pick up their third Southland Conference volleyball victory in a row.

 

The Bearkats upped their season record to 8-13 and their Southland Conference mark to 3-2 by winning 19-25 22-25 25-22 25-21 15-13.

 

Haley Thomas led the Kats with 15 kills. Anna Ferguson added 12 and Katie Phillips posted 11.

Phillips and Megan McNamara entered the contest in the third set and sparked the Bearkat rally. McNamara assisted on 36 Bearkat kills in the last three sets.

 

Sam Houston totaled 60 kills for the match. UTSA had 52, led by Stefanie Robbins with 15.

 

Sam Houston jumped out to a 6-5 lead in the first set, but UTSA won nine of the next 12 points to go up 14-9. The Bearkats cut the margin to 22-18 but Valorie Rodgers and Amber Brooks came up with two kills to win the opening frame for the Roadrunners.

 

The Bearkats fought back from a 17-13 deficit to take a 20-19 lead in the second set. With the score tied 21-21, UTSA won four of the next five points to take a two set to none lead into the locker room for the break. The second set was tied nine times with five lead changes before the Roadrunners took control.

The fourth set was tied four times and the fifth eight as the two teams battled back and forth. There were 16 lead changes in the match.

 

Carli Kolbe added nine kills and Brittanie Wallace and Anna Ferguson each posted five kills to round out Bearkat scoring.
