HUNTSVILLE ? Lauren Lewis scored three minutes and four seconds into sudden death overtime to give Texas State-San Marcos a 2-1 Southland Conference women's soccer victory over Sam Houston State Friday at Pritchett Field.
The two teams battled in a hard, physical game in which the Bearkats had several opportunities but could put only one goal on the scoreboard. Sam Houston State totaled 15 shots while the Bobcats had 11.
Luana Miessa and Raquel Bueno each led Sam Houston with five shots apiece.
After a scoreless first half, Texas State-San Marcos took a 1-0 lead on a cornerkick from Andrea Grifo which found Erica Michaud open at the near post. Michaud tapped the ball in for the goal at 48:37.
Miessa evened the match on a shot from just outside the six-yard box after a through pass from Bueno.
Bueno had two opportunities to score after beating the defense in the final five minutes as Sam Houston turned on the offensive pressure, but one shot went wide and the other high. At the end of the first half, the Bearkats had two free kicks just outside the penalty area and but were called offsides on one of the set plays and missed wide on the second.
“We had our chances. This match could have gone either way,” SHSU head coach Tom Brown said. “We made a couple of defensive mistakes and they capitalized on both. Against good teams like this, we have to learn to put ourselves in a position where a team can't beat us on half chances.”
Lewis's goal came when she intercepted a pass at the arc and right footed it into the net.
Texas State-San Marcos upped its season record to 8-3-3 and stands in second place in the Southland Conference with a 4-0-1 league record. The Bearkats fell to 7-4 and are 2-2 in league action.
Sam Houston State will host Texas-San Antonio Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Pritchett Field.
