HUNTSVILLE ? Allison Dillon scored the only goal of the match in the 22nd minute to give Texas-San Antonio a 1-0 Southland Conference women's soccer victory over Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon at Pritchett Field.
Defender Erin Mackay started the scoring play with a midfield interception and a pass to Veronica Najera in Sam Houston terrority. Najera found a wide open Dillon who lofted the ball over the head of a charging goalkeeper Jenny Pence and into the back of the net.
Both teams had other opportunities, but, in a hard, physical match that saw four yellow cards, neither side could convert.
UTSA upped its season record to 7-9 and stands 4-2 in Southland Conference action. The Bearkats dropped to 7-5 for the year and 2-3 in league play.
“The girls battled hard. When they come out and play with that kind of effort, good things can happen,” SHSU head coach Tom Brown said. “We've got some things we need to work on this week. We need to connect better between midfield and up front. We're not creating enough opportunities for our offense to score. But, again, I can't complain about their effort.”
In a defensive struggle, Sam Houston was credited with 10 shots and UTSA with 14. Pence was credited with five saves. The Bearkats forced three cornerkicks.
Luana Miessa had four shots for Sam Houston.
Sam Houston State takes to the road again next week, playing Friday at Northwestern State and Sunday afternoon at Central Arkansas.
