Madden sisters' rivalry highlights Friday soccer matchup

MADDEN SISTERS RIVALRY HIGHLIGHTS SHSU SOCCER MATCH THIS FRIDAY
NATCHITOCHES ? Friday when Northwestern State hosts Sam Houston State in Southland Conference soccer action at the Demon Soccer Complex at 7 p.m., there will be a family reunion, but not the friendly, catching up on old times type of engagement that one's accustomed to.
Monica Madden, senior defender for the Sam Houston State women's soccer team, will match up with younger sister April, a sophomore midfielder for the Demons.
Older sister Monica has been a key figure in the Bearkat defense that has posted seven shutouts this season on the way to Sam Houston's current 7-5 record, already the most victories in one season in the six-year history of the program.
Monica earned Academic All-Southland honorable mention honors last year. She has appeared in 50 matches during her Bearkat carerr.
"We both look forward to the game," Monica said. "We're both very competitive. Of course I want to win. The big sister is always supposed to win. That's just how it is."
Monica came to Sam Houston from Anderson High School in Austin where she was All-District and team Most Valuable Player on an 18-1 regional finalist squad.
“It's going to be an awesome game,” said father, Michael. “Both girls are very excited to be facing off one more time.”
Since April was a freshman last season, and the Bearkats upset the Demons by a 2-1 score on Oct. 19 in Huntsville, the older sister has held the bragging rights for what will be 370 days when they meet on Friday.
“It was so annoying,” said April of last year's loss. “Because she has rubbed it in my face every chance she gets. I want the bragging rights this year.”
Whom will momma and daddy root for?
“It's a hard game to watch because I want both girls to do well,” says mother Stephanie. “Either way, we win and lose. But you can rest assure we'll be at the halfline wearing shirts that supports both teams.”
Friday's contest at Northwestern State is the first of two road games for the Bearkats this weekend. Sam Houston State will travel to Conway, AR, Sunday for a 1 p.m. bout with Central Arkansas.
Next home match for Sam Houston is Friday, Oct. 31. When the Bearkats play host to McNeese State at 7 p.m.
