Bueno hat trick powers Kats to victory

Thibodaux, LA ? Senior forward Raquel Bueno scored three of the four goals for her first career hat trick to lead Sam Houston State to a 4-0 victory over Nicholls State Friday in the Bearkats' 2008 Southland Conference opener.

With the three goals, the Sao Paulo, Brazil, product became the leading scorer in the history of SHSU's six-year women's soccer program.

Bueno scored on a pass from Deanna Long eight minutes and 45 seconds into the contest, then added two more at the 75:25 and 79:58 marks in the second half. April Lozano and Luana Miessa, respectively, assisted on the two goals.

Miessa accounted for Sam Houston's fourth tally, scoring off a pass from Lozano at the 20:23 mark in the first half.

The hat trick was the second this season for Sam Houston. Miessa scored three goals in the Kats' 5-0 victory over Prairie View A&M August 31.

Eight players have produced 14 hat tricks in Sam Houston's six-year history.

Bueno upped her career goal total to 21, surpassing Kim Brown who scored 19 goals from 2003 to 2005 as Sam Houston's all-time career goal scorer.

The victory upped Sam Houston's winning streak to six matches. Before this season, the Bearkats had never won more than two matches in a row. The 6-2 start for Sam Houston this year stands as the best in program history.

Sam Houston will play its second Southland Conference match to complete the weekend trip Sunday at 1 p.m. at Southeastern Louisiana.
