North Texas ends streak 76-71

HUNTSVILLE ? Outscoring the Bearkats 11-6 in the final four minutes of the game, North Texas ended Sam Houston State's 45-game home non-conference winning streak with a 76-71 win at Johnson Coliseum Thursday night.

 

Sam Houston had not lost a non-conference game at Johnson Coliseum since 1999 when the Kats lost to Texas A&M 73-70. The streak was the second longest in the nation, behind only Duke with 65.

 

Josh White led North Texas (2-1) with 19 points. Dominique Johnson added 16 points and George Odufuwa put in 15.

 

Corey Allmond led Sam Houston (1-2) with 15 points. Barkley Falker and Preston Brown both were in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

 

The scored was tied eight times including 16 lead changes. Sam Houston's last lead came with 5:05 to play on a jumper by Allmond. Tied 65-65, two free throws by Harold Stewart put the Eagles ahead for good.

 

Down two points at halftime, 36-34, Sam Houston started the second period by jumping out to its largest lead, seven points, 44-37 with 17:43 to play. The Kats held the lead for four minutes before North Texas went on a 9-2 run to go back in front 49-48 on a layup by Johnson.

 

The free throw line was the difference with North Texas hitting 20-of-29 (.690) while Sam Houston was 15-of-29 (.517). North Texas shot .521 from the field, 25-of-48, while Sam Houston hit 26-of-59 (.441).

 

Sam Houston State will play host to Wright State Tuesday at 7 p.m. in their next home game.

 

This was the first meeting between North Texas and Sam Houston since 1997.
